Back Ground &#124;

In terms of my view to surrounding, I am interested in virtual world. When I realized that my friends were addicted to coffee shop ‘Starbucks’ and website ‘Facebook’ , I do not understand why they are so addicted by those features. So I researched the hierarchy of human needs and the history of coffee store. And I found that the coffee shops have been regarded as symbols of the Modern Age. In addition to this, a coffee was not just a coffee when it became popular: it is a symbol of productivity and people’s desires. It reminds me of the film ‘Modern Time’(1937) which described how employees of a factory became to desire assimilated like a machine in a daily life.

 Then, I did research about the relation and effects between the peoples’ desire and symbolic places. Facebook is a virtual place but it is function is the same as a real place like a market place. I compared the structures of the FB site to Starbucks’ homepage and Apple’s homepage. The structure of the Facebook site is almost the same as online commercial websites. Also, it is similar to the stock market because people want to evaluate and exchange others’ information using symbolic images such as the ‘Like’ button. My question is what will be the desire of the future? Also, via this project that consists of making virtual Facebook store, I want to use symbols that show how the viewer interacts with the others.

By using motion capture, I look forward to seeing the viewer’s reactions as they evaluate, classify, observe and compile images in the virtual world. With my work, I am researching comparisons of symbols in retail stores and websites in my paper. Moreover, my experiment will examine the meanings of symbols in virtual worlds and the reactions of viewers carefully.

I notice that I usually have fixed process.

The process, itself, is constructed by my experience and the following conclusion is already made by myself from the past.
It might look different on the surface but normally it has consistency in the core. Also I could not find how it works exactly and affect my choice through my life because it could be broadly vary related to the surroundings such as time and environment.

Whether I am aware of this or not, it is very clear that the process is embedded in my mindset just like stack of invisible layers.

However, when I choose to take the path that I don’t usually take, I can feel that I am active and alive.

I think that the moment when I have new set of view on the surroundings it makes me more opened and flexible. That varying view is not from fixed process, but related to surroundings.

I have been interested in social networks, following reflected fluxes and the way that people interact with their communities and surroundings.

Nowadays, there are so many devices to listen to refined news from mass media.
It’s easy to get new information via diverse channels like TV, Internet or Radio.
Also, since the development of technologies, people speak more freely than ever. Nevertheless, the circulation of these expressions is very short term, indirect and semi-anonymous.
As a result, neighbors have become estranged gradually and relations drift apart.

Through my installation, local publics can record their speeches, talks, listening to the others’ voices in a community area.
The installation replays their recordings continuously until another person will record a new voice. There will be multiple recordings and playback units that create an audio network together.
Therefore, people can have real relationships, separate from the virtual world. These activities will lead people to participate more in local society.

Using speakers, sensors and input voice recorders, local people record their sounds and listen the others. It will be in public space so people can see it easily. Then, people can listen their neighbors’ stories. The installation instigates communication in public spaces through sounds.
This interventional work through interactive sound encourages viewers to experience, re-observe, and re-locate spaces and environments through their own perspectives, informed by their senses and immediate experience.

The ultimate ambition is to facilitate a less isolated, more interactive community experience--to build a live community full of humanity.
This project aims to design transforming towns into the places that are more engaging, sustainable, accessible and well-connected for people. This project promotes awareness how many news of neighbor and gives opportunities that people can connect to local society by their voices. With using new technologies and methods, through the creation of innovative social media tools and community capacity building initiatives, the sonic installation attempts to create a networked dialog around community.

By doing so, it aims to reduce the information gap between neighbors, foster social connectivity, contributing to the development of better connection and more vivid city in daily life.

		<description>Shadow Room; Knowing About Myself, 2008, Interactive video work

Concept &#124;

People face their personalities when they meet others in surroundings.
In our daily lives, we start to sense not only our own individuality but also hidden sides of our characters. All of us see these are blended.
I want to compare that relationship to that between light and
shadow.

Even though we are familiar with the shape of our own individuality,
the hidden sides of our characters in the shadow always exists.
I aim to invite self-awareness through my work by using light and space.

As the viewers move in the space, they can see their shadows, which are changing in color and shape, thus enabling self-awareness.

By this installation, I want to change viewers’ conceptions of self.
In this work, I would like to lead the viewers to open to inside of themselves by realizing their numerous shadows and
figures that they already have in their mind, changing and dividing the viewer’s original shadows to draw the viewer’s attention.
I use the interaction of the basic elements of the light such as red, green and blue.
Each lights stands for the Id, the Ego and the Super Ego.
My work reveal the silhouettes that the viewers don’t usually expect, and looks improbable figure of them.

Concept &#124;
"Do I ever doubt my own feelings?" or "Can I believe my feeling without doubt?"The installation places near the window and it is hidden. Sounds from hidden installation make people confused using random nature sound of birds, wind, crickets and rain when people move toward. The sounds are from the scenery of window. They also see and listen the scenery of window at the same time. It is unusual sound of the place. Then when people move away, the usual sounds of the place such as talking and footsteps grow louder. The unusual and nature sounds hide themselves into the usual sound scape.
 About the questions, because paper is white, we can read written black letters.
It means that without white or empty space, we can not recognize black letters. To read the letters, there must be white space. Like this, we can aware the something only in relation.

Every bit of sound could reflect and stand for some parts of world. Sounds have their own unchangeable properties.
However, naturally, they can influence and affect each other to make multiple rhythms and melodies. Also the sounds can reveal or hide their existence in layers of surrounding like the relationship between self and others in space. We can not hear every single sound around us.
 In fact, we tune in to some specific ones at any moment. People usually do not care about their surrounding sounds. Their aims and interests guide their attention. Many sounds are not perceived as we go about our daily activities.
People do not give enough attention to hear the small sounds but rather keep going and not notice the many small worlds.
I would like to encourage the audience to listen to and be aware of the small bits of life.

Back Ground &#124;
I am interested in social networking and social fluxes and the way that people interact with their communities.

Concept &#124;
My sonic installation attempts to create a networked dialog around community. Nowadays, there are many devices to listen to refined news from mass media. It’s easy to get information via diverse channels like TV, Internet or Radio. Also, since the improvement of technologies, people speak more freely than ever. But, the circulation of these expressions is short term, indirect and semi-anonymous. As a result, neighbors become more estranged and relationships drift apart. In my installation, local people can take a picture of themselves, record their speech, listen to the others’ voices and put their location on the screen, in a public area. The installation will replay their recordings continuously until another person records new audio.There will be multiple recording and playback units that create an audio network together. Therefore, people can have real relationships, separate from the virtual world. These activities will lead people to participate more in local society.

Keyword &#124;
Sound Networking Environment

Description &#124;
Using speakers and input voice recorders, local people record their sounds and put their location. It will be in public space so people can see it easily; for example, a street bench or a tree in a park. Then, people can listen their neighbors’ stories. My installation instigates communication in public spaces through sounds. This intervention through interactive sound encourages viewers to experience, re-observe, and re-locate spaces and environments through their own perspectives, informed by their senses and immediate experience. The ultimate ambition is to facilitate a less isolated, more interactive community experience--to build a live community full of humanity.
My project aims to design new technologies and methods to transform cities into places that are more engaging, sustainable, accessible and connected for all.

Through the creation of innovative social media tools and community capacity building initiatives, How are you! promotes awareness how many news of neighbor and give opportunities that people can connect to local society by their voices. By doing so, we aim to reduce the information gap between neighbors, foster social connectivity, contributing to the development of better connected and more vivid cities.

Example of Dialogue &#124;
       Dialogue by SuHyunKim

Comment &#124;
How are you! project has been inspired by Susan Philipsz (“Songs of the City” in London), connect private to public : her voice to public spaces, via a sound installation that she sang songs, like bus station, subway, train station and bridge. On a daily basis, many citizen access and listen her voice coincidently in public space.

Myself and the city. A = O
 Who am I?
I live in flexible city that has an invisible surrounding like sound in flow.
What make up my personality is the surroundings such as what I listen, what I see or what I eat.
I am not only the generated element by soundscape of city, but also the soundscape is the generated element by my sounds in daily life.
Keyword &#124;
Flexible City Space, Vivid Sequence, Live and Flow of life

Description &#124;
I recorded sounds from specific area where has characteristic contexts in Seoul such as the Gyoung Bok Palace, the Han River and 24 hours subway stations. These are very unique places of Seoul that has specialty than the other big cities.

For instance, the Han river has a large scale even though it flows through middle of city, Seoul; compared to the other major cities like Paris do not have a such a big scale like the Han river. Thus, Seoul citizen can listen and watch flow of water anytime and anywhere because of it.

Secondly, Seoul has various forms of life. Since many shops and markets open for 24 hours, it never sleeps. It always keeps alive and awakening. People live in Seoul, it means that people can keep their daily life awake and control freely with vivid events of city.

With an interactive sound visualization work, I would like to reveal the network of soundscape that Seoul people make in their daily life and show the identity of network by location also.
Collaborators &#124;
Team ERA
ERA, this group project is for an exhibition of Sound Art Lab, Seoul.
This project is a performance show that shows an interactive performance with using a installation, video and sounds.
All sources of sound and film were produced from Seoul.

Flexible Axis, 2005, is a combined space that connects a path of daily life and physical space.
With using a moving wall system, it was designed for an alternative to the mode of living, by liberating people from confined private spaces to open public spaces.

Through the work, the space was aimed at altering and making visible systemized space that people occupy. I believe that people’s lives can be richer by the interaction with the changes of their surroundings like the theory of James Q. Wilson and George L. Kelling, the Broken windows theory.

It determines that individual behavior is affected by their point of view what and how people look at surrounding or society.
